Janet John, Housing Officer, RNIB Cymru
  janet john
RNIB Cymru works to improve the lives of people with sight loss by creating an inclusive society that supports independent living, as well as stopping people losing their sight unnecessarily.

Janet’s significant and far-reaching work has had a significant impact, ensuring that people with sight loss are safe and more independent in their own homes.

Before Janet joined RNIB Cymru three years ago, the charity had little involvement with the housing needs of people with sight loss. She has put the issue of design for people with sight loss firmly on the agenda in Wales, and influenced changes to the Welsh Assembly Government’s Design Quality Requirements, which means that every home in Wales built in the social housing sector is accessible for people with sight loss.

Janet’s style is about inclusion and support. She developed the RNIBs Visibly Better scheme, which thanks to her development of key partnerships with membership organisations and housing associations across Wales, is a truly enabling scheme. So far 113 sheltered accommodation sites are following its recommendations, improving safety and inclusion for more than 4,000 vulnerable older adults.

To support those working in the sector, Janet has developed an accredited qualification through the College of Occupational Health, and has trained more than 1,000 professionals involved in housing in Wales. She is also studying towards a Masters degree in Accessible Design.

Janet has inspired change from practice to policy to legislation at a national and local level in Wales. Her leadership has ensured that thousands of people in Wales will be safer, more independent and remain in their own homes and communities, now and in the future.
